If you find pace handicapping too complicated to understand the difference between half mile and final fraction you may find this chart easy to work with. The calculations are made in fifths of a second and are used for the half-mile and the final time for sprint races only. You can use 1/2 time and 3/4 time for route races. Look below for examples

R1/50.2-116.3
-3.0/-7.0 total> -10.0
R2/48.1-115.1
-1.1/-5.3 total> -6.4
Now let's do a fast sprint race. Example
45.1--111.3
+1.4 / -1.0 total> +.4
44.3--109.2
+2.2 / +1.1 total> +3.0
If you feel the need to add BL just use final and /5 BL>8=1.6
